More about DISC Profile Applications : Hiring and Recruiting

DISC Classic 2 Plus and Team Dimensions 2.0 are the assessments test and profiles most used as an adjunct in hiring recruiting process.

  • You cannot "pass" or "fail" the DISC Profile.  There are no "right" answers.  The DISC Profile does not precisely determine job fit, job fitness, or success.  It instead describes one's  behavior patterns, style, traits, or type.

  • DISC in Hiring: Recommended is to use DISC Classic 2 plus with the 6 relating, managing, selling/presenting supplements AND Team Dimensions 2.0. Two assessments for one person.

  • We know DISC is used in hiring.  May we offer some suggestions from our clients. 

The first problem is that those who hire assume DISC will do all the work; that you can just get a DISC test and it will somehow magically tell you if someone should be hired or not, what career you should have, or what job exactly you will be good at.   The flaw is that NO DISC Profile can do any of those things.  There is no valid, perfect job slotting mechanism within DISC.  For example, all High I's are not good at sales.  What if they're selling computer robot chips to mid-western farmer cooperatives?.  All D's are not good executives and managers.  What if they're managing a monastery or a hospice or a school district of High S teachers?  You get the picture. DISC was never designed to be a hiring tool, instead it was designed to be a learning assessment tool.

The second problem in hiring with DISC is that employers fail to profile the job.  They remember to profile the person, but they forget to profile the job.  Who says it's a High S job? Does anyone know?

Common ways employers use DISC in hiring:  We do not endorse or recommend these, we are just telling you how the employers using DISC do it, and you will find your own best method.Work Expectations Profile Employee Employer workplace expectations Identifies Work Place employees employers expectations differences

  • Some define the job carefully in behavioral terms, without assessments, and then profile the applicant with the DISC PPSS Online, adding appropriate supplements.

  • Some fly by the seat of their pants and are grateful that DISC PPSS provides them much more information on issues that they forget or never learned to ask during hiring and recruiting interviews.

  • Some do things they've not told us about and are real good at it.

  • Some profile and know it's a bad fit, but hire for reasons that they feel are important.  These employers know they're buying employee problems, but at least they know what they're buying and know where the problems will be ahead of time.

We recommend you do something.  Turnover, replacing, bad hires cost enormous sums of profit.  May we suggest you try some of the DISC PPSS Online reports in the way you feel it best for your organization.


Overview of the Four Dimensions of Behavior

Dominance:  People who score high in the intensity of the 'D' styles factor are very active in dealing with problems and challenges, while low D scores are people who want to do more research before committing to a decision. High "D" people are described as demanding, forceful, egocentric, strong willed, driving, determined, ambitious, aggressive, and pioneering. Low D scores describe those who are conservative, low keyed, cooperative, calculating, undemanding, cautious, mild, agreeable, modest and peaceful.

Influence (Inducement in Marston's time): People with High I scores influence others through talking and activity and tend to be emotional. They are described as convincing, magnetic, political, enthusiastic, persuasive, warm, demonstrative, trusting, and optimistic. Those with Low I scores influence more by data and facts, and not with feelings. They are described as reflective, factual, calculating, skeptical, logical, suspicious, matter of fact, pessimistic, and critical.

Steadiness (Submission in Marston's time): People with High S styles scores want a steady pace, security, and don't like sudden change. Low S intensity scores are those who like change and variety.  High S persons are calm,  relaxed, patient, possessive, predictable, deliberate, stable, consistent, and tend to be unemotional and poker faced. People with Low S scores are described as restless, demonstrative, impatient, eager, or even impulsive.

Conscientiousness (Compliance in Marston's time):  Persons with High C styles adhere to rules, regulations, and structure. They like to do quality work and do it right the first time.  High C people are careful, cautious, exacting, neat, systematic, diplomatic, accurate, tactful. Those with Low C scores challenge the rules and want independence and are described as self-willed, stubborn, opinionated, unsystematic, arbitrary, and careless with details.
